someone called wanted to collect on a bill that supposedly was overdue–So. Cal Edison.. My bill is paid automatically each month. He wanted my credit card number and other info.

Scammer called from (800)892-2345 identifying themselves as from Southern California Edison and warning that my electricity was about to be disconnected and could be off for up to five days. When I told them my bills are automatically paid each month they said I had gotten a notice that my billing information needed to be updated. I said I received no such notice and they said I needed to call another number to update my information and avoid disconnection. That number was (323)454-1137 and it answered with a menu just like the real Edison, but when I chose #2 for billing I did not get the real Edison recording requesting address or account number, just someone answering saying, "Thank you for calling Southern California Edison…." I asked him to hold on while I check my account on line and he put me on hold. Once I got on the website and realized this was a scam I hung up.

This person called first to inform us that the electricity would be stopped for six hours. We said that we didn’t receive any warning about this. Then he gave us the number to report that issue to the company. When I called that number the SCE computer option came on a I pressed number 1. 2 was for something else. Now a different person answered and asked for the account number. When I told him I didn’t have it, he asked for the telephone number. I gave him the business number and he said we were current on our payments, but we didn’t pay for the deposit. He said that we had to pay for the new digital meter by March 18th, 2018. If we didn’t pay they were going to fine us with a $5,000 fine. When I asked why you didn’t send me a letter, he said the letter was sent June 18th, and that is why it is past due and they are going to come to turn off the electricity, and remove the old meter and replace the new one. When I asked how to solve this he said I had to pay the bill of $499, and the best way to do it was to follow the steps on the email. He asked for my email and I gave it to him. He sent the email that is attached below. When I began to ask him questions about a name and the actual Southern California Edison he said that Michael Smith is his manager. He specified that the payment had to be cash only. I said this sounds like a scam and then he hung up.

Got a phone call with the Caller ID phone number the same as SCE’s customer service phone number. Caller stated I was past due $250+ and needed to pay immediately or my service would be "interrupted." I asked when was my last payment submitted and in what amount and scammer "did not have that information available." He asked me to purchase a Green Dot prepaid card at Rite Aid so I could make immediate payment. I asked for a supervisor and he said he was. He got very angry and frustrated and started telling me if I didn’t care they would be "cutting my service." I told him I knew it was a scam and he just got mad and told me to have a nice day and hung up. Called SCE and they confirmed it was a scam and not to worry about anything since I hadn’t given them any money.

Scammers called our company claiming to be Southern California Edison representatives.

They claimed our last payment was returned NSF and that we needed to pay immediately.

Oddly enough we had been having banking problems so it was not beyond the possibility.

They stated we need to pay the NSF bill immediately to avoid interruption and that kiosk for SCE were down.

Because I was trying to avoid having to pay cash I actually called Customer Service # and they confirmed they were having kiosks issues. So we paid the bill cash A.S.A.P via money pak

THE VERY NEXT DAY, calls started coming in again stating that we need to pay the remaining balance on our security deposit account. How do they have all this info?????? of course we paid and now in the hole $3,400.00

Their incoming call center sounds EXACTLY like S.C.E…. Beware!!
