Type of a scam Fake Invoice/Supplier Bill

I received a business envelope in the mail with the company name of Labor Compliance Department PO Box 100369, Ft Lauderdale, FL, 33310. The envelope also stated 2018 Labor Law Poster, Business Mail, Time Sensitive. The name and address was a business I recently incorporated.

Inside I found a Bill for $94.00. The invoice further stated that my business is required by Federal Law to post a current compliant labor law poster (in bold). Further goes on about whether there is one employee or 1000, I must post UP-TO-DATE (in bold) employment posters in the workplace.

Further the invoice states that pursuant to Federal Law 29 USC Sec.999(i) and 29 Sec.2005 penalties and risks of non-compliance with posting regulations can lead to potential fines in excess of $17,000 per instance.

Further the invoice states to obtain your federal employment labor law poster, please detach the bottom coupon and return in the enclosed envelope with your document process fee of $94.00. You will be receiving a new updated 2018 version of the poster. Please allow 2-3 weeks for delivery of all-in-one Poster (the word poster was capitalized).

The invoice was sent to the business name at my home address.

Type of a scam Other

I received a letter in the mail from ‘Labor Compliance Department’ which, according to the letter, was initially sent out on 9/12/2016. The letter claims that federal law requires my business to purchase compliant labor law posters to put up in the workplace. My business doesn’t employ anyone for starters. The letter states any business with 1 to 1000 employees must comply with this.

The "document fee" for paying for these posters is listed as $84 due by 10/3/2016. The letter threatens that if I fail to comply there can be fines up to $17,000. The letter cites Federal Law USC Sec. 999 (i) & 29 Sec. 2005 as their reasoning for collecting these fees.

This letter was sent to my business address less than a week after the business was registered with the state. The only contact information listed is a gmail account ([email protected]). There isn’t a website or phone number listed anywhere on the letter.

The company I used to register my business (LegalZoom) actually sent an email to me the day after they got my LLC filings back from the state saying to watch out for this exact kind of scam so clearly it’s a big issue that should be dealt with. Why a business like this is able to operate and not be shut down entirely is beyond me.
