Total money lost $15,000
Type of a scam Phishing
My mom lost $15k when all her savings got moved to checking after a long phone call from someone impersonating her bank. Her caller ID showed it was her bank calling one early evening. “Bob” said someone spent $1500 on her debit card account in El Paso, was it her? Confirming this was not her making the purchase, “Bob” went on to give her her account balances, names on the account and other information (which were correct; and of course he had her cell number). He mentioned he just needed one detail to make sure the $1500 got returned, and then the bank fraud department would call her the next day. In hindsight, the only piece of info he needed was the answer to a password question. And of course she provided that to make sure the $1500 got put back. The next morning the bank calls her. She asks if they got the $1500 put back. The bank has no idea what she is talking about. They called to consult with her after seeing her savings and checking were wiped out. All “Bob” needed was that password question answer to transfer her savings to checking, and spend down the checking account using her debit card
