Hello ,

I contacted your school admin at UTSA I explained that I was looking for Administrative/Personal Assistant and your email was sent to me, they said you are an honest person. This job is flexible so you can perform the tasks during your spare time outside of school and the position is extremely rewarding. Get back to me ASAP with your cell phone number or your personal email for more information.

Sincerely ,

Victoria Christensen.

This was the message I was sent. I just copied and pasted it. It was received on my school e-mail, and when I looked up the e-mail address, it most closely matched a company in New Zealand that didn’t have a Victoria or John on their list of staff. I forward the e-mail to my advisor and e-mailed the project manager at the New Zealand company to let them know a previous employee is potentially using their old work e-mail to phish people.

I don’t know if this message is legit or not. I get texts like this often. They always want more info from me, and I hesitate to open their unvalidated link or give them more of my personal info. Can you help me discover if this is legit or a fraud attempt of some sort? Thanks.

Below is the text from a similar message. I have the same questions. They always make it sound like they have "something special for you, only you." And tell you to act fast before your deal, reward, opportunity (i.e., con) expires. Don’t think or ask questions, just click our link and open the snake pit in Pandora’s Box. That’s how it feels to me, but I am unemployed, and IF this is a legit message, I could use some "assistance." See below:

you may prequalify for $353 in food assistance. Find out if you qualify by 6PM.

I have received several calls from this number saying they have a complaint on me. Then they want me to "pay a fee" to resolve the complaint. This is noted on the BBB website as these scammers are trying scaring victims into paying by claiming to have filed a “civil complaint” against them. When they called previously. I told them to file the complaint. I telemarketer said I was rude.

They called again several times, but i did not answer the phone. I think the number has been spoofed. But you can hear others in the background, so it sounds like a "boiler room" operation.

They called again on 2/19 and I told the rep to quit calling me. I then called the number back, and asked to talk with a supervisor. Another woman came on the line, an I told her I was going to report the call to the FTC (which I did). Again I asked them to quit calling.

The phone call is always the same. A VERY low-grade robotic voice saying "Hello, this is not a scam. This is a response to your request for information on your free medical grade back brace." I have repeatedly asked to be taken off of their list, notified them that I am on the do not call registry, and reported their calls but it still persists two to three times a month.

Phone call received from this number, changes every time but it always begins with "This is not a sales call, do not hang up." Requests information regarding personal medical history, medicare information, and attempts to solicit details for medical insurance. Call received from different number every time, no person on the line but an automated message. Repeatedly informed them to remove the personal landline number registered to my retired, 70+yro grandfather from their calling list but calls continue. Incredibly annoying and potentially dangerous for someone who doesn’t know better.

This number has called me numerous times. They are offering zero percent interest on all my credit cards. I have asked to be removed from their list more than once and they continue to call. Today the "representative" decided to be rude and kept saying "I will send you love. You need love? I’m sending some your way." He wouldn’t give my a company name or agree to take me off the list. Only continued to talk over me as I was asking to be removed.

Type of a scam Charity

An older woman of Asian descent ringed my door bell around 1730-1800 tonight. My mother answered the door. She told her she was collecting for a charity for children. I was outside and I did not hear the door bell but I went inside the home and my mom was talking to her and she said she was not interested. I then came in the home and my mother was ending the conversation. My mother told me after she was selling Lindt chocolates or Purdy chocolates and they were 2 for 20 dollars and then said 4 for 20 dollars Canadian ( I also overheard this part as it was near the end of the conversation when I entered the home). But, my mother told me these Lindt chocolates were 3 or 4 in a box and are cheaper to buy at a store. My mom said no and she left. My mom told me it was a charity for children but she forgot or did not understand at first which one it was. The lady had a volunteer tag on her neck as she showed my mother this as she told me but I do not know if it has a photo, described the organization or if it was just a simple tag that said volunteer as my mother did not really focus on that in detail as she just told me she had a tag on her neck that said volunteer. She then went to other houses around my neighbourhood. I think this lady is selling chocolate for she wants to make money (as she is poor) or she may have gotten these chocolates by some other means (stolen, gift etc) and she wants to get rid of them and make a dollar or two. The lady is short, Middle Aged between 45-64 years with a thick Asian accent brown pants, blue hat from what I saw when she left my mothers property.

Three men came to my apartment building. They buzzed my apartment at the front door, and I did not respond. I assume someone else let them in. About 20 minutes later they knocked at my door. The conversation was as follows:

Me: "Who is it?"

Them: "We are here to talk to you about your ComEd bill."

At this point I open the door but only a small amount. There are three men. None is wearing a uniform. One is wearing a badge attached to his belt, but I cannot see it. The man closest to the door has a ComEd bill in his hands.

Man: "We want to take a look at your bill to see if you are being charged an unnecessary amount. You may be being charged an additional $7 a month. Do you have a letter like this?

Me: "No. I do it all electronically."

Man: "That’s fine, you can pull it up on your phone."

Me: "I’m not doing that. Do you have any ID? Do you have a business card?"

Man: "No, we don’t, but I can write down my phone number for you."

Me: "Okay."

Man: "Do you have a piece of paper I can use?"

Me: "No."

Man: "Okay, well…come on let’s go."

At this point, the men turn to walk away, and I close the door.

My phone rings with the number above. I never answer my phone if I do not recognize the number. Then they leave a recorded voicemail (that is partially recorded because the recording begins when my answering machine picks up). In essence the message states that they have tried to contact me for 6 months regarding some issue (that they do not state) and that if I do not call them back they will file charges in the morning. I tried a reverse lookup for the phone and could only see that it was a cell phone from New York and the carrier is Slic Network Solutions in New York. Additionally, I hAve not received any notifications from any one regarding something that would warrant this phone call or message.

When I called the number back, I get a recorded message that is very generic and says it’s customer service and you can press 1 to speak to a representive or 2 to be placed on a do not call list. I chose 1 hoping to find out who this is. Instead another recording states all representative are busy serving other customers. Then asks for an email address to address your concerns via email. A man with a very heavy accent called and asked to confirm all of my contact information, and what he had was correct. At one point he asked "where are you now?" and I told him it was none of his business. After a fairly lengthy conversation he finally made his point, which was that the IRS had them review my tax returns for the past five years and that I owe them $3,000. He repeated several times that there is a warrant out already for my arrest and that I would be arrested and put in jail for a very long time. He suggested I might be a victim of identity theft and asked if I made purchases online. When I told him that was nonsense, that I HAD in fact had correspondence from the IRS asking for a copy of a form that I had neglected to send with my 2016 tax return and that there was no mention of back taxes being owed. He ignored that information and insisted that I would be arrested for tax evasion for this amount due. I hung up on him at that point so I could do a search on the number used.

I was called at 6:20pm on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. The nice woman offered me an unbelievable deal on travel all expenses paid, car, cruise ship, including meals. All because I had stayed at one of their hotels. When she paused, I asked her to please take my phone # off their list and never call it again. Today I received a call from a restricted number. I did not answer it, but they left an extensive message saying they were going to serve papers tomorrow at my home or employment. They claim that they have paper to serve related to my name and SSN. Nowhere in the message do they use my name. If you listen closely to the message you can tell it is prerecorded, but they speak in a way that makes it sound like the call is specific.

They went so far as to give me a case number and a phone number. The number is 713-568-4030. I did an internet search on that number and it has been reported that others have received the same call from that number and others.
