Total money lost $98.50

Type of a scam Phishing

Greetings ~

The following is but a sampling/list of many, many, many emails I have received within a short period of time. I started opening them, as opposed to simply deleting them. I opted to Unsubscribe from their mailing lists. Then began their relentless emails. Also, I’d like to clarify that the credit card company reimbursed me for the $98.50. There is more to this but is complicated to explain via email. I am partly to blame (consenting to their Reward–hence, giving them my credit card # to pay for S & H of the reward) for taking a survey) but don’t want others to be taken advantage of by this companies unethical business practices. However, they have a well constructed/policy in place to protect themselves. The businesses advertised are legit. It’s the "Reward" and/or Today Onlys, Limited Supply/Offer, etc, etc is how the "others" (for lack of the appropriate word—not the legitimate companies themselves) suck us in:

I have plenty more of where the aforementioned in my Spam folder should anyone request them. I’m so hoping someone can do something to stop this company or whatever they are & stop the influx of emails (even when they automatically go to my Spam folder). I’ve wasted nearly this whole day trying to find out how to BLOCK their emails. To no avail.

With Kind Regard,

We answered an ad for a tractor for sale in Eminence MO. Ad is still up on Marketplace (https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/202185260974487/). The person with the ad responded that he was running the add for his aunt and we needed to email her. I can forward to you our email exchange. She said she was a sergeant in the Air Force at a Billings MT airbase. The tractor was in the Billings Eby warehouse and would be sent to my address at no cost to me if I would send her my name and address. This seemed odd. Slo I did a name check on Patricia Mitchell and found many negative references for her and I also found your site. I expect this is a big scam and the guy in MO who placed the ad is part of it. Hope this helps.

the first call on this number was March 5th, and originated from Antwerp, Belgium. After that call, the same number showed California. I got eleven calls. The caller claims that there is "suspicious activity " on my "social", and if I don’t return the call, my number will be suspended. Today March 6th, I have received two calls this morning with same message but new #, 805- 613- 0011. I blocked the calls, but am still receiving messages. I didn’t return call, so I didn’t lose money.

I couldn’t tell if it was a live person or a recording. I said, "Hello", and I heard, "Hello, can you hear me?" I said, "Yes, I can hear you. " Then the phone hung up. Now I have been told that they use this "yes" to zero in on since it is recorded and use it to say I okayed a sale for something which I did not. I tried several times to call them back but never made any sense out of what they said before they hung up the first time but the second two times I tried to call them back, I just kept getting a recording asking if I was from California and if so to press one and if not to press two. I looked this up and found that California is a state that requires two party permission in the recording of phone calls but of course I live in a state that does not have that law. Anything I can do besides block this number which I already did? What do I need to do now? Check for any charges they could have made with my "yes", in the "yes, I can hear you?" Normally I don’t answer the phone unless I know the number but today I was expecting 2 very important business calls and I did not know what number they would be coming from. Thank you. I would appreciate any advice I can get as to what to look for that these people can do. My calls were forwarded to my cell phone so I am unsure what number they called.

Scammer simply called about higher education then wanted to give me a list. They asked if I could hear them and I answered yes like an [censored]. I then told them I could look up schools with Google and hung up.

I did some research and found that them using the "yes" can be recorded and used to access services and that others have been scammed by similar though not identical calls.

I needed tech support for Microsoft. I went online and looked for Microsoft phone support and I thought I found a legitimate number. I called it and the person told me my he had to access my computer to help me. I let him do that (ugh) and he then told me my computer had malware on it. Then the told me I should buy mcafee virus protection….which I did. Oddly he actually fixed the problem I had with Microsoft

Only when I logged into my new mcafee account did I see that there was another persons contact info and last 4 digits of a credit card that was not mine. Also he said I should buy the 3yr plan for $139 yet my mcafee subscription is only for one year. I found your website when I entered the phone number that I called from my phone records.

Advertised a guitar on craigslist. About a month later got a phone message that someone was interested. They were out of town and wanted to purchase it for “Cousin”. They were texting was sort of childish with weird wording and improper spelling. They trusted by pictures and we’re going to purchase the guitar. He said they were sending me money for the guitar and shipping. I was charging $425 and I received a check for $1900. It looks like an authentic check from a large department store in the area. They said the extra money was for shipping other stuff also. I texted them back and said they could take their check back and buy a guitar from someone else. They were pretty responsive to return texts messages before. But now I have not heard back from them when I said I wasn’t going to cash the check.

I get about 10 calls each day with out state area codes as well as local and robocalls. You will hear Recordings sounding like real person on other end of line. When you call the number back, you get recording to click this or that. When you call back second time you get a different recording to send concern to a email address. Never a live real person. These calls never stop. Some still come through even with blocking. I have received about 300 calls within 2 to 3 months. They always are about healthcare or homeownership. The spam number is 651-2402498. An email they give is [email protected]

Type of a scam Credit Cards

The email scammer sent emails to my non-profit organization members requesting each person to purchase 6 – $100 Amazon Gift Cards for me as I was in a meeting and could not get away. They wanted the purchaser to scratch off the silver seal, photo all the cards with the account number and send the information to the email sender.

One of my people did purchase the cards, scratched the seal off and sent the photo to me, not the email sender. So I hope this will not reach this sender. Another person started to purchase the cards but the clerk at the store asked what the person was doing. Then told my person that this was probably a scam and recommended that my person check with other officers to my whereabouts. Upon checking, they found out that I was at home trying to reply to other people in my organization that this was a scam. I then sent out a group email to all my people that this was a scam, delete it and do not reply.

This email scammer used my legal name and I do not use my legal name in our organization so that raised a flag to some of my people. I am working with my webmaster to delete the document that we think this scammer got the information from.

The scammer was persistent in sending more emails requesting where was the information they wanted. All of my people were told to not reply to any of these emails. There big mistake was not using my email but a non-recoginzable email.

This phone number was called 6 times in three days and a couple of times a message was left. So the message is a voice telling you to call the number back and give the last 4 numbers of you social. On July 31, 2019 I called the number. First I got a man that hung up on me then I called straight back and a non speaking English woman answered. She said is this ***. I said yes. I said this number has showed up on my phones many times and I want to know what this is about. Then she said there is a arrest warrant in my name. My response was what for and how do you know you have the right person. She says I do. Then I said then what is my full address. She just gave me the town. Again I said my address. After no response and her telling me I’m going to be arrested, I said this is a scam and you better not ever call this number again. I knew they were trying to get me to pay money to keep from getting arrested which is a scam. I don’t want anyone of any age to get scammed on this.

I was going through Facebook rentals and one advertise for $900 in a decent area. I inquired and they walked me through the steps to schedule a viewing. The website for this home is legit. The site sent me the lockbox code so I went and viewed the home. When I arrived and got in whoever posted asked me to leave the back door unlocked for a cleaner to come in. (this home was in pristine condition.)

He then proceeded to send me an email application saying his family moved to Texas, etc.

I have reported the post as well as the company who actually owns the home.

Call received on voicemail to "your student loan." No name of company used, but a name of the caller given, return phone number and a "reference number" to use when calling back. The number called back goes into a seemingly endless loop of fantastic offers (eligibility to win a vacation, $100 gift card, etc), all of which require a credit card and small charge in order to be eligible. I never gave anyone any personal information, but could never get past the promotions.

Behind the endless wall of promotions there is no entry point to a company or person, and there is nothing to do with student loans.

One of several emails from this same scammer using my own personal email for both sent from and reply to. Of course I never sent anything nor ever used any of the sites indicated I was using. Contents are as follows:

Hello!

As you may have noticed, I sent you an email from your account.

This means that I have full access to your account.

I’ve been watching you for a few months now.

The fact is that you were infected with malware through an adult site that you visited.

If you are not familiar with this, I will explain.

Trojan Virus gives me full access and control over a computer or other device.

This means that I can see everything on your screen, turn on the camera and microphone, but you do not know about it.

I also have access to all your contacts and all your correspondence.

Why your antivirus did not detect malware?

Answer: My malware uses the driver, I update its signatures every 4 hours so that your antivirus is silent.

I made a video showing how you satisfy yourself in the left half of the screen, and in the right half you see the video that you watched.

With one click of the mouse, I can send this video to all your emails and contacts on social networks.

I can also post access to all your e-mail correspondence and messengers that you use.

If you want to prevent this,

transfer the amount of $727 to my bitcoin address (if you do not know how to do this, write to Google: "Buy Bitcoin").

My bitcoin address (BTC Wallet) is: 11wQFVQ65DdfzWXqup3JdY7prFazMbXjc

After receiving the payment, I will delete the video and you will never hear me again.

I give you 48 hours to pay.

I have a notice reading this letter, and the timer will work when you see this letter.

Filing a complaint somewhere does not make sense because this email cannot be tracked like my bitcoin address.

I do not make any mistakes.

If I find that you have shared this message with someone else, the video will be immediately distributed.

Best regards!

The scammer told me that I had "a computer virus (‘alureon’) and a lot of foreign addresses. He said that the problem with the virus began 7 days earlier, and that he was calling to warn me and offer their services to "clean it up." Then he pressured me to allow them to access my computer remotely using to take over my computer screen and show me the "aleureon virus and infected foreign viruses on my screen." I did allow them to show that because he said that I had had viruses on this computer in October of 2017 and that they {Rizontec] had cleaned it up at that time and I had purchased a1-year antivirus protection plan. He gave me my Rizontec customer #. (And that much is true, because I recalled that I had gotten a call about two years ago on the same type of scam, and unfortunately that time I did send bite on their scheme.] He again scrolled through a long list on my screen of "foreign adcresses that looked like computer programming to convince me that my computer was infected. Next he typed a list of the jobs that they would do to remove the infected files, etc., and then he added on the

Invoice/bill for their services. At that point I became anxious about the cost, sending them money, and revealing my password so they could "clean it up." When they dropped the price. "because You’re a nice lady", and said that I "needed to go to Walmart right now, leave the computer running, and purchase an Apple Gift Card for $500.00," I immediately shut down my computer, changed my password, and called a local Tech support person, called Apple Support, and-activated my on-line accounts. They called me a total of 9 times, until I figured out how to "block caller" at the (i) symbol after the caller"s name and city. They spoke with heavy Eastern accents [like Pakistani], talked fast, spelled badly, used English names, but pronounced them wrong, wrote "500$". Buat I am afraid that I am on a call list. However they did not change their phone immediately. They were very persistent, but I believe there were only two of them, David and Kevin (pron. Kee-vin) The phone # showed up as a Lake Wales, FL number, but they were irritated when I asked about that, and they said "NO, They were in California!" as if that is more legitimate than FL.

Someone called with a telemarketer’s tone of voice in a think Indian accent posing as a potential customer. The kinds of questions asked and the tone of voice were not typical of a legitimate customer inquiry. The call I received like this culminated in the man asking me to take his email address, "decision maker at —" and he asked me to repeat it, which I did not because I was already wise to the scam by this point in the call. I hung up at that point, but may have been tricked into saying yes. The second time I got one of these calls about a week later I asked him some test questions, in case this was a different caller with a legitimate inquiry. His responses were not very far off yet still not fitting, even taking into consideration English as a second language. He seemed to be rushing through my inquiries to get me to say yes. The man said he would stop in at 4 p.m. just like the last call said, and he asked "Are you a salesperson?" and "Will you be open then?" trying to get a YES reply. He asked me to take his email and I said "that is not necessary" and I ended up hanging up on him. The call came from a blocked number.

While I was on a trip out of the country 2/13/2019, my bookkeeper received a series of emails. The emails looked exactly like my email address and signature, they used my email address above. So, my bookkeeper thought she was communicating with me. Long story short, the person who was impersonating me asked my bookkeeper to change their bank information for their direct deposit of their pay checks. As she thought she was communicating with me, she made the change. We found out last Friday March 1, 2019 when the employees came to me saying they did not receive their pay. After calling my book keeper we realized what had happened. That my email was spoofed and they directed the funds to a bank that uses re-loadable debit cards. The funds were deposited on Friday. We have contacted intuit, who does the payroll transactions and filed a report and they are trying to get the funds returned to us.

I am the property manager of a senior living community and two of my residents return the postage paid card. A woman showed up today unannounced, and tried to lure them into opening their homes – which one opened her door, and the woman blocked her form closing the door by putting her foot in her front door. My resident said she was very sweet talking at first, and then got very rude, and told her to NOT try to make contact with the business (mailer) she had filed out. My resident called me, and I entered the address on the card, and found this website I am sending to you.

After the woman left, there were multiple copies of another "Mail this card today" from Old American Insurance Company. I believe this is part of the same scam. I am not able to atach more than one image, however, I can send it o you if you want to contact me.

Type of a scam Other

On October 3, 2018, I received a call from what I thought was a PC support company called Technocare Technology, who I’ve paid $1,599.00 for life-time computer support back in June 2018. Assuming that they were the ones calling, I had forgotten to ask for a security code to confirm who I was talking to. Anyway, they had stated that I was due a refund of $1000 from my original cost of their service and that the amount could be transferred back into my bank account. They said that they needed to remove and then download some new software on my PC. So, I let them gain access to my computer to start working on it while I watched. After keeping me on hold several times, as well as loosing contact and waiting for them to call back quite a few times, they wanted to try and transfer the refund to my bank account on line, which I agreed to; but they claimed they were having problems making the transfer. I had made the original payment through Paypal, who in turn had the payment transferred from my bank account. The PC person on the phone guided me through the process of writing a dispute to Paypal to claim back the $1,599.00 for inadequate software. After which, he told me that I had to send $1,500 granting a $100 discount to complete the refund process. He requested that I send the money with the use of 3 gift cards at $500 each. That’s when I asked why I need to send money to receive a refund and I mentioned not going through with this. That’s when he threatened me with a law suit, which spooked me and so I complied. I purchased the gift cards and read the account and pins numbers to him. After which, he said he had to confirm that the cards were good and would get back to me in about an hour. After about 2 hours of waiting for a call back. I decided for the first time to call him back and realized that the number they used to call me could not be reached.

When replying to the job through private email outside if fb no one responded until i wrote on the original post on the fb group explaining that I had contacted them days ago after they suggested that i PM them for more information. In my original email I placed a disclaimer that would nit allow for them to use my email address for anything other than the job in question. Inly after I posted that i had emailed them days ago they said they already had responded so I went to my email and found a new email from them written at 3 am. It was a copy and paste of the fb post with one additional job title added. It was written in poor grammar and signed faithfully yours RDowney. I received a phone call and when I said "Hello", the man on the other end of the line said "Is this (my first name)" and I replied, "Yes, it is". The line then went out and when I tried to call the line back, it came up as a local business phone number for Olin Brass employees. I checked with their corporate number of *** and was told it was not a valid extension and was probably a scam. Also concerning is that my home phone number is an unlisted phone number.

I don’t know where this originated but the voices (I’ve gotten 3 calls) have been both male/female with U.S.A. (midwest) accents. They inform me that my ‘computer company’ is going out of business & I should call a certain phone number to ‘collect my refund’. At the end of the call they mention Windows & Microsoft. I DOUBT VERY MUCH THAT MICROSOFT IS GOING OUT OF BUSINESS! ‘Computer company’ is a vague term. I sincerely doubt a ‘refund’ of money will be forthcoming; rather they’ll want my bank account number to ‘transfer’ the ‘refund’ to me. Fat chance! I have hung up without going any further with them.

Voicemail was left saying my federal tax id and myself was under investigation including my family. That the government is filing a lawsuit against me and to call the company to dispute. They say The government is filing a debt against me for intentionally not paying a credit card debt. Not true and not the method that the government uses to notify someone of an issue.

I think they are spoofing people’s personal cell phone numbers. I got a call yesterday with an actual person’s name showing up on my caller ID on my cell phone. I answered, the message says "This is not a sales call, do not hang up. Press 1 to be transferred to a live person for help with a medicare covered back or knee brace. Press 2 to be added to our do not call list." Yesterday, I pressed 2, they called me again from another number today, both are similar to family member’s numbers, so I wasn’t sure if it was another family member on the same plan, but a number that I didn’t have in my phone yet. When they called today, I pressed 1, got a live person, told them I asked them to take me off yesterday and the guy hung up on me before I could finish my sentence. No company name given, I was going to ask the name before he hung up on me, I tried to call back and it went to voicemail, making me think that it is in fact spoofed from a real person’s phone number.

Below is the email received.

I won’t beat around the bush. I am aware noah33 is your pass word. More to the point, I know your secret and I’ve evidence of it. You don’t know me personally and nobody hired me to check out you.

It is just your bad luck that I found your misadventures. The truth is, I setup a malware on the adult video clips (porno) and you visited this website to experience fun (you know what I mean). While you were busy watching videos, your internet browser began functioning as a Rdp (Remote control desktop) that has a keylogger which provided me with access to your display and web cam. Right after that, my software gathered your complete contacts from facebook, and email.

Next, I put in much more time than I should have exploring into your life and created a two view video. First part displays the recording you were watching and second part displays the recording of your web cam (its you doing inappropriate things).

Frankly, I am willing to forget exactly about you and let you move on with your daily life. And I am going to present you two options that can make it happen. These two option is either to ignore this letter, or just pay me $ 1900. Let’s examine above two options in more details.

First Option is to ignore this email. You should know what will happen if you select this path. I will, no doubt send out your video to all of your contacts including friends and family, co-workers, and many others. It does not save you from the humiliation your self will must face when friends find out your dirty videos from me.

Option 2 is to pay me $ 1900. We will name it my “confidentiality fee”. Now let me tell you what happens if you choose this path. Your secret remains your secret. I’ll delete the recording immediately. You keep your routine life as though none of this ever occurred.

Now you may be thinking, “I will call the cops”. Without a doubt, I’ve covered my steps to ensure this e-mail can’t be traced to me and yes it will not prevent the evidence from destroying your daily life. I’m not planning to steal all your savings. I just want to be compensated for my time I put in investigating you. Let’s hope you have decided to create this all go away and pay me the confidentiality fee. You’ll make the payment through Bitcoin (if you don’t know this, type "how to buy bitcoins" on search engine)

Amount to be sent: $ 1900

Receiving Bitcoin Address: 1Q44vb1sVAwbqg1Qtp3SADJoXWrPtgnD8f

(It’s case sensitive, so copy and paste it)

Tell no-one what you will use the Bitcoins for or they possibly will not sell it to you. The task to have bitcoins will take a short time so do not put it off.

I’ve a special pixel in this email, and now I know that you’ve read through this e-mail. You now have 24 hours to make the payment. If I do not receive the BitCoins, I definitely will send your video recording to your contacts including friends and family, colleagues, etc. You better come up with an excuse for friends and family before they find out. Nevertheless, if I receive the payment, I’ll destroy the video immediately. It’s a non-negotiable one time offer, so don’t waste my time and yours. The clock is ticking.

Prospective Client: Hello this is Morris, how are you doing today? i will like to book DJ for my daughter birthday please let me know if you are available for the DJ Services, Do you accept check or credit card without Paypal for the payment ?

My Response to Initial Email: I can do check credit card through Paypal or through Square

Prospective Clients Second Email: Thanks for getting back to me, good to hear this i am looking for April 22nd but i don’t know maybe the date is open, if the date is open with you that would be okay, also what is your accurate cost for 4 hours service, would be held………..*** Denver CO, 80218, are you okay with the check for the payment, because my credit card does no go with the Paypal and square, looking forward to read from you soon

My Response: It will run $600 for the event. I can take Cash, Check or credit card prior to performance with signed service agreement. We take half down deposit in advance with the service agreement. PS: If your daughter has any specific songs she wants to definitely hear have her put together a list of a few and send them over by email prior to the event date.

(I sent over a service contract attached via PDF download in the email)

Prospective Client response: Thanks for your honest and understanding, I am okay with the cost of $600 for 4 hours does that include processing fee + tax i will give you $50 for your business tips i would need you to do me little favor cause i have a little issue with the payment of the event planing management for the event planing the manager told me he didn’t have a credit card machine so i will need you to do me the favor to add her fee together with your fee she has to receive $2700 for the booking of the event planing

My final response: The $600 covers all fees associated with the event, If you want to add in a tip that is fine. I cannot pay out another person through my credit card processor, nor will I overpay myself to then pay someone out of my own pocket. There is a danger that payment may not be processed correctly and if that happens it would be easier for me to eat a performance cost that cost me time and then try and recover the fees after rather than try and recover both the fees for my time and also extra money that I spent out of my own pocket to pay another person as well. This would put me in too vulnerable of a position in terms of both financial terms and tax liability as well. There is also no reason for this in this day and age. Even home based businesses can easily sign up to get paid through SQUARE at www.squareup.com or Paypal at www.paypal.com or many other payment portals or credit card processing services within minutes. So between now and next week she can easily be taking credit card payments.

I get about 15 of these a month. People say the same things over and over all the time… it’s always either a photographer, a venue or an event planner that somehow cannot take credit card payments. I find that very hard to believe since most payments these days are credit card transactions. So if they aren’t processing credit card payments then they really aren’t in a real business or they need to quickly step it up. I will gladly help her set up her own credit card processing solution rather than keep enabling her to stay in the dark ages.

One of my design clients after years of Paypal payments becoming banned from using Paypal to collect money or use it to to pay through Paypal so I had to set up an account with Square and was paid $1600 to do his website design the same day I set up the account. So there is absolutely no reason she cannot do the same.

If Square or Paypal does not work for her I also have a friend that works for a Credit Card processing company that will be glad to meet with her to get her set up so long as she meets certain requirements for processing per month, which it sounds like she probably does if this one fee is $2700.

ADDITIONAL SIDE NOTE: I constantly get both text messages and emails like these all the time so I sort of knew this was coming but I cannot simply accuse everyone of trying to scam me or I won’t stay in business long since I would be also turning away actual concerned customers that have legitimate questions about whether or not I accept credit cards but all the fake ones usually start similarly and by the end are trying to say they need me to "Do Them a Favor" and usually say something like I cannot talk to you by phone as I have a hearing disability, or I am in the hospital so cannot talk by phone or cannot meet etc… Most likely these people are targeting anyone in the entertainment business or the wedding business IE DJs (like myself) Photographers, Make Up Artists, Event Planners, Florists, etc.

People using different vehicles going through Davie County, North Carolina knocking on doors during December 2015. A man holds up a can of Glade, says he is selling Glade OR they pretend to be Kirby vacuum salespeople. There are three men and one woman (driver). Reported vehicles include a blue van, a white van and a purple van. The local police have stopped them and found they have no business license and nothing for sale in the vehicle. One person reported the same people broke into her home last year. They also walk around outside homes while one person knocks on the door. Most citizens have been refusing to let them in and many have called the police. When police are called, the people in the van flee. Another person did let them in and they vacuumed her mattress in a bedroom while the two others stole items from the living room. Many incidents have been discussed on Facebook and citizens are warning each other of the scammers. This happened the same time in 2014 when residents are likely to have expensive gifts under the Christmas trees in homes. These door to door scammers have also been asking women if they are home alone.
